Health information technology (HIT) programs may offer training in health information management, health information technology, medical coding and billing or medical transcription. While Indiana doesn't have many schools that feature health information technology degree programs, the ones that do typically offer various levels of training, such as certificate, associate's or bachelor's degree programs.

Outlined below are six Indiana schools that offer health information technology programs. The programs may also prepare students for industry certification exams that can improve employment opportunities. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers certifications for graduates of HIT programs; available designations include Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA).
Indiana University - Kokomo

Indiana University - Kokomo features a four-year Bachelor of Science in Health Information Administration program that consists of 55 credit hours of prerequisite courses and 67 credit hours of professional courses. Students learn to work with computerized clinical data and manage health information systems. Two clinical practicum courses are completed during the student's senior year. Except for these practicum experiences, all courses can be taken through distance learning. Required courses include database design for health information administration, medical terminology, health information requirements and standards, ICD coding and healthcare quality improvement.

Indiana University - Northwest

Indiana University - Northwest in Gary offers two programs with health information technology training. Students in the HIT associate's degree program learn to perform technical duties in a healthcare office, such as coding, billing and creating registries. The first year of this two-year program can be completed part-time. Course topics include medical terminology, coding and classification systems, health record law and reimbursement principles in healthcare. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), and graduates are prepared to take the RHIT exam.

The health information management bachelor's program prepares students for managerial positions within the HIT field. Students learn to improve data quality, manage electronic health records and analyze and research reimbursement procedures. This program is awaiting CAHIIM accreditation, which is required before it can prepare graduates to take the RHIA certification exams.

Indiana University - Purdue University - Indianapolis

Indiana University - Purdue University - Indianapolis offers three levels of study for students interested in health information technology. The 26-credit-hour medical coding certificate program focuses on coding, medical reimbursement, healthcare information requirements and health information concepts. The program can be taken on a full- or part-time basis, and all courses are offered online except for the clinical practicum. Credits from this program can transfer to the health information administration bachelor's degree program. Graduates are prepared to pursue CCA certification from AHIMA.

To earn the bachelor's degree, students must complete 121 credit hours. Students learn about medicine and the law, healthcare reimbursement systems and health information storage/retrieval. The health informatics master's degree program prepares students to handle patient and healthcare provider information for hospitals and other facilities. Students enrolled in this program receive training on professionalism in informatics, scientific data management, the social impact of information technologies and the business of health informatics. Master's-level students must complete a thesis or research project.

Indiana University - Southeast

Located in New Albany, Indiana University - Southeast has a coding specialist certificate program that prepares students to take certification exams and work as coding specialists in hospitals, clinics or other medical offices. The program is focused on familiarizing students with the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems. The 18-credit-hour program includes courses in pathology, medical terminology and body structure, as well as two sequential coding courses. Students learn about CPT coding in acute and ambulatory settings, classification principles, optimization, clinical symptoms and treatments.

Ivy Tech Community College

Ivy Tech Community College offers an Associate of Science in Health Information Technology program at the school's Indianapolis, Lafayette and Fort Wayne locations. The program offered at the Indianapolis campus is accredited by CAHIIM; the programs in Lafayette and Fort Wayne are pending accreditation. Students in the HIT program learn how to educate patients, maintain healthcare records and manage health information. Courses include health information and law, health information systems, ICD coding, quality improvement and information systems fundamentals. Students also complete health information externships.

Vincennes University

Vincennes University (VU) in Vincennes has a health information management certificate program with a concentration in transcription that prepares students for entry-level employment as medical transcriptionists. The curriculum includes classroom instruction and lab experiences. In addition to two medical transcription courses, students take courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medicolegal aspects for healthcare and pathology.

VU also offers a two-year health information management associate's degree program that teaches students to organize healthcare data, manage patients' records and utilize diagnostic codes and procedures. This CAHIIM-accredited program requires completion of 73 credit hours and can help students prepare for the RHIT certification exam. The program can be completed in four semesters plus a summer semester. During the last semester, students complete a 280-hour externship in a medical setting.
